Wee Nip Racing
September 2013
The weather today was a bit damp but thankfully the rain kept away, unfortunately so did much of the wind which left us dealing with the usual shifty wind conditions when the winds are light. Five of us had a good time and with a few visitors popping by to pick up parts, bring along boats under construction or impart news of supplies the day had a much busier feel than just the five racing.
In the end it was those who mastered the tricky light winds that fared best Mike Ewart and Ardbeg came out on top (it must be all the sponsorship) but it was close with Peter Shepherd & Sheep Dip doing his best to win a medal for Abington Park MYC finishing just two pints adrift from Mike. Norman Hardy & Red Hackle was always in the hunt and took three wins, once Peter Jackson has sorted out his set up problems he fared much better bringing Red Rooster home in front in the very last race. Alan Smedley took up the offer of the APMYC club boat Black & White and whilst he struggled at first as he gradually improved the set up and got used to the way the boats handle he started to put in some more creditable performances which culminated in a win in Race 15.
The course was a kind of homage to the America's cup course with a short first leg, rounding a mark to port, followed by a down wind gate, back up to the upwind gate, return to the down wind, around a mark to starboard and over the finish line. With the wind shifting a lot and the gates at either end of the course this did have the effect of splitting the small fleet in many of the races which was the intention.
All that remains to be said is well done Mike. and the next Wee Nip event is being held next Saturday 21st September courtesy of Two Island RYC at Furzton water, hopefully we will see you there.
