Wee Nip Racing
October 2013
A really good turn out for the Wee Nip competition this month saw thirteen skippers in attendance, the competition was close throughout the fleet, with many of the skippers having private battles between themselves depending upon their ability and experience. Five first time Wee Nippers were present,Keith Jackson, Bob Lamb, Roger Regan, Richard Smith & Paul Strong, Roger & Richard are both new to model yachting and judging by the quality of the models they have produced Tomatin & Craggenmore respectively, and some of the sailing ability they occasionally showed at this event they will soon be moving up the tables.
Keith Jackson & Bob Lamb came to collect their Wee Nip parts & were loaned Pinwinnie & Black & White, our thanks go to Mike Ewart & Paul Risdale for supporting the class and once again loaning prospective builders spare boats, thankfully Keith Jackson managed to obey the unwritten rule with regards to borrowing a boat from Paul Risdale. |
After three races it looked as if Peter Shepherd and Sheep Dip were ready to challenge Glen Keith for supremacy of the event, however he was forced to retire after race three having decided to wash the inside of his transmitter in the pond. Peter Wood brought along the almost ready Mortlach he just needs to get that keel sorted and he will be racing his first build, consequently he borrowed Ardmore for this competition, seventh in race 10 the highlight of the day.
Paul Strong is a seasoned model builder and a friend from former sailing club days, however the hectic racing scene at Abington Park is something of a new adventure for him, after a couple of minor adjustments to sails his results started to improve, with a sixth place his best position for Knockando. Richard Smith was suffering a problem with his foresail sheet line which hampered his efforts somewhat, it was just one of those problems that get highlighted in light wind conditions but are difficult to solve at the lakeside, I am sure he will be back and racing amongst the fleet once he gets this minor issue resolved.

Brian Hawkins has started to improve, his Banff is now much better equipped and he gradually starts to capitalise upon this, his best result coming in race nine where he finished a very creditable fourth. Nigel Rudd & Brian Lamb had a close battle in mid field, as is becoming the norm for Nigel he saved some of his best racing to the very end proving he brought Long John home second in race 15, however this was not quite enough to overhaul Black & White, skippered by Bob Lamb racing in his first event for sometime.
The battle for second through to fifth was between three stalwarts of racing at Abington Park and newcomer Keith Jackson, who just pipped Mike Ewart for fourth on count back of second place results. Paul Risdale finished ahead of these two, just and Peter Jackson finished second. Peter often ran a close second to the winner, however Keith Coxon was a class apart and ran out an easy winner in the end .The others were left to lick their wounds and try to work out how they can add a little extra speed to their performances. Thanks to all of you who took part, helped rescue my transmitter, donated lead or just came along to see how things were going your support is greatly appreciated. Peter Shepherd |
