Wee Nip Racing
May 2013
The number of Wee Nip builds under construction is ever increasing but for this first event all bar two of the skippers with finished hulls were in attendance. The Wee Nip Racing is monthly with each race having it's own small prize & medal, a Trophy will be awarded to the Skipper with the most Medals at the end of the year if skippers are tied for position the Trophy will be awarded on the finishing positions in the last race.
As is normal at Abington Park MYC Events, before the off the boats were checked for minimum weight and keel depth, just a couple of boats were marginal and the builders of these have volunteered to correct them prior to the next event.
The racing consisted of two triangles and a sausage. There was not much to choose in performance in any of the boats, which is how we intended the racing to be carried out. However the racing now gets more crowded and the racing rules of sailing need to be understood by everyone, although we kept our signature principle of enjoying our racing and going home as friends.
A new skipper Brian Hawkins from Two Islands Club joined us. He brought along his Wee Nip, (Banff) but still had to get a Mylar set of sails. Paul Risdale was able to loan him Pinwinnie and Brian had a good meeting just bumping along the bottom rung, showing some class in patches he just needed to put it all together into one race.
Sheep Dip had an eventful competition with Richard Lees taking over the controls for races 6, 7, & 8 whilst Peter Shepherd did some more video work, results of which will be posted here when available, then she had some battery issues and then some more, obviously there is still room for some improvement.

Second, Third & Fourth Places could not have been closer Lismore gradually got better and better as the event wore on with Dave Lissamans best results coming at the end of the event, Norman Hardy sailed Red Hackle as well as I have seen him sail with a string of good results meaning he just pipped Dave to third by one point and only just fell short of Peter Jackson's newly decorated Red Rooster.
The racing was close throughout the event with nobody really getting to far in front, making finishes close and exciting. Our Medal winner for this month is Paul Risdale sailing Pigs Nose and winning eight of sixteen races who was most pleased to receive his prize, "a miniature bottle of 18 year old malt" Thanks to Sandra Hardy who once again kept perfect score with her usual good humour. |
