Martin Dale Cup 2013 - RG65 Competition
July 7th
Nine skippers, seven different model types, beautiful sunshine and at times as many visitors coming to see the action as skippers, the morning wind was light and very tricky with most skippers choosing to use their biggest sail sets. In amongst the light to non existent winds were little puffs which tended to have the effect of closing the fleet back up so whilst the races were slow the tension was high as to just who would get the egde.
It was once again a sausagey triangle sort of a course trying to take into consideration the ever changing wind direction, this was altered at race 8 to the opposite way round and shortened slightly to ensure that all 16 races were completed.
Well done to Paul Risdale who sailed his Goth to great effect, picking up 10 race wins and finishing the event on 16 points, from the scorecard it would be easy to be fooled into thinking Paul had an easy day although this was far from the truth constantly being pushed by Mike Ewart having forsaken his Razor for his own build Viperfish he was constantly chasing Paul to the line, the only surprise being how close Peter Shepherd came with his score in third. Peter never really looked like he was coming anywhere and rarely challenged for the lead, however by a string of consistent results managed to finish just ahead of Alan Smedley. Alan along with some of the visitors today is starting a model sailing section at Emberton Park Sailing Club.
Peter Jackson had his high point of the day in Race 7 and Norman Hardy had a purple patch just before the break for lunch sailing his Bermuda rigged Jif65. Nigel Rudd suffered with a rudder servo issue which finally gave up at lunchtime.
Thanks to all who took part and we look forward to racing with you again soon, the next RG65 event at Abington Park being on the 4th August.
