Martin Dale Cup 2013 - RG65 Competition
August 4th
The August round of the Martin Dale Cup saw the weather turn changeable, so much so that at times all the skippers struggled to work out where the wind was supposed to be coming from. This led to all the races results being almost as unpredictable as the wind direction, except of course Paul Risdale (Goth 53) once again managed to come out on top albeit by less of a margin this time.
This month also saw the return of two skippers from Kingsbury Water Park fresh from their expedition into deepest Huntingdon, Graham Stanley (Razor 88) started strongly finished up well and somewhere in the middle it went a bit so so, almost the opposite of third placed Peter Shepherd (Jif 65, 65), trying out an experimental Soft sail his performances gradually improved in the morning and then after lunch varied between brilliant or not so good.
Mike Ewart (Viperfish, 36) put in his usual always challenging but never quite making it stick performance with his boat, starting on a low aspect ratio sail may just have been what kept him out of the top three this time.
The results between fourth and seventh were really close with all four of these skippers scoring in the fifties, Norman Hardy (Jif65, 72) sailed his Bermuda rigged boat particularly well today keeping Mike honest and having a good tussle with the other Bermuda rigged hull of Mark Beesley (Puma, 05) another Kingsbury Water Park adventurer. Just coming in behind these three was our very own PeterJackson (Ghost, 30) struggling with his boat he went home muttering something about building a wooden hulled RG65!
Nigel Rudd (Ghost, 96) had a rudder servo issue which eventually failed and saw him out of the racing for a time consequently his score suffered badly, it was good to see Dave Lissaman (Doppler, 29) return to the lakeside after a short absence, unfortunately his visit was only fleeting as his boat got wet on the inside, then the rain came and we all got wet on the outside.
It was once again heartening to see such a variety of boat designs and sail types present at the event, it is what a development class should be all about, each skipper trying to improve his chosen design to the best of his ability.
Sandra Hardy our resident scorer was on duty again, to keep us in order and fill out the scorecard with her usual efficiency and good humour, may I say thank you on behalf of all skippers.
The next round is on Sunday 1st September and if one of us doesn't catch up with Paul Risdale then I am sorry to say he will have to get the Martin Dale Cup engraved for a second year running.
