Martin Dale Cup 2014 - RG65/Micro540 Competition
April 26th
report by Peter Shepherd
Six intrepid skippers came forth to contest the second round of the Martin Dale Cup, there was a predominance of Micro 540 class yachts including for the first time a Micro Magic sailed by Trevot Thomas.
The start of the event was marked by a catalogue of disasters, we came to set out the course to find the floor on the club dinghy had parted company and I was left sitting in a rubber ring! Whilst PJ went to collect the back up buoy set up and retrieval equipment the skippers started to assemble and I put out three marks as far as I could wade in chest waders, this proved to be only about 10 yards out. When PJ arrived back we were then able to drop off two marks further out to give us a sort of upwind, downwind course, although with the prevailing wind from behind and over the trees the course really had a bit of everything. The just before the start Abracadabra had a rudder failure and had to be rescued by the electric recue boat, it was my good fortune that Paul was on hand with another Micro 540 and kindly lent me the boat for the duration of the event. |
And so finally we got to doing some racing, Paul Risdale immediately got to grips with the tricky conditions the wind and the course provided where the morning conditions really belonged to him I started slowly with the borrowed boat as gradually I tweaked and altered the sails so that they were more to my liking, having got them somewhere near to where I would set them by race 6 , I set about trying to find the best way around the course often this involved trying to find the wind on the water rather then trying to sail the shortest quickest course, sometimes this was more successful than others.
Trevor Thomas brought alomg his Micro Magic a welcome addition to the fleet which incidentally fits the Micro 540 rule s in standard rig trim. A battle then commenced between Trevor & myself which ended in the two of us in joint second on 29 points a short way back from Paul with myself taking second place on countback.
Peter Jackson was the only swing rigged boat on the water with a new set of sails with a marginally greater area than the previous set, I don't think Peter had the time to do much "swishing" before the event which showed in his overall performance, although he was always in the hunt and managed a race win just before lunch in race 8.
Geoff Raygada perservered with a new Wee Nip based Micro 540 his best result coming in race 6, although Geoff was rarely far behind the rest of us his inexperience showed in what were very tricky conditions but as he continues to do the right things and get as much time on the water as he can I am sure his results will improve. He switched to his RG65 for the last four races which is why his results show DNF's for these ones.
Unfortunately the RG65 turn out was poor with only one sailed by Tim Lees in attendance, his Puma is now sporting a set of Bermuda Rigs and once again Tim was able to gain experience from sailing in race situations.
The Daventry Country Park really is a lovely venue, due to circumstances we didn't really make the best use of the available wind this time, however I believe as we get better at setting courses and understanding the lake it will be more to everyone's liking, the next event here is the Daventry Countryside Show on Sunday May 11th

The points for the Martin Dale Cup are worked out in the following manner, 40 points for a win, 39 for second, 38 for 3rd and so on, plus for RG65 Class yachts a bonus point for every RG65 you finish ahead of, for Micro 540 class yachts there is a bonus point for every yacht you finish ahead of regardless of class.
