Martin Dale Cup 2013 - RG65 Competition
October 6th
Just five stalwarts of the Martin Dale Cup attended this months meeting, which was a shame because the weather was superb and although the wind was light early on the RG65's were still sailing well, it gradually freshened throughout the day making life a little easier for everyone. What was interesting there was a gradual drift amongst the skippers present towards wrap around swing rig sails made from plastic bags. Some of these enforced and some due to skippers experimenting, by the end of the event four of the five were using them.
Peter Jackson set a short first leg, with the first mark taken to port then a downwind gate, followed by a long reach to the upwind gate back to the first mark once again to port with a finish back over the start line. This type of course does make for some interesting racing, with skippers having to make judgement calls as to which mark to round at the gates to give them the best possibility of reaching the next mark first. The short first leg makes the start very critical and everyone had to be on their best game to make sure they didn't lose out .
Once again the Goth 65 of Paul Risdale, ran out the winner it does seem to be able to pick up in the light winds when other hulls just seem to be plodding along. Mike Ewart started the day with his Viperfish 36 but this seems to have sprung a leak somewhere and so very early on he switched to Paul Risdales Puma, this boat also fitted with soft swing rig sails this enabled him to finish second ahead of Peter Shepherd also sailing a Paul Risdale hull, a Jif65 65 (what would we do without him?). Peter has also recently switched to a set of soft sail swing rigs which appears to have improved his results, however his configuration varies slightly from the ones on Pauls own boat.
Finishing fourth was Peter Jackson, who started the day with his new hull a Puma once he also switched sails then results started to improve although it took some time to get the set up near to right and the switch to a lower more forward foresail appears to be a step in the wrong direction with the foresil over riding the main.
Norman Hardy had a new lighter Jif 65 hull, complete with swing rig however he struggled to get the balance right with a sail that appeared to have to much weather helm, a bit of experimenting with one of Pauls rigs at the end of the event seemed to suggest that this might be the way to go.
Sandra Hardy enjoyed the day relaxing in the sunshine, and keeping score for which she is greatly appreciated.
As the major places in the league for this class have already been decided, the final event at this competition will be held at Daventry Country Park as an RG65 Open Event on Sunday 3rd November starting at 9.00 am, please email in advance [email protected] for more information and to register your intention to attend.
