Wee Nip Racing
August 2013
Only five skippers braved the predicted rain to attend this months Wee Nip race, although I hasten to call them stalwarts at this early juncture, they certainly had that look about them.
As ever the wind was an unpredictable mistress, being unable to make up her mind as whether she was coming or going, and so the OOD Peter Shepherd (me) took the unusual step of completely ignoring it when setting the course. We therefore had a short leg, occasionally upwind, to a starboard rounding of mark one, followed by another short leg across a spreader to port, at what was supposed to be the windward end of the course. An occasional run or beat down to a leeward gate, back to a port rounding of a buoy halfway up the course, this leg was usually a beat but sometimes a run. Across the lake to repeat the first mark to starboard and then through an upwind gate returning home to the start/finish line. |
If all that sounds tricky, it was, however as I had complete faith that the seasoned veterans (old stalwarts!) attending the event would be able to cope I was quite happy to set such an intricate course, they in turn repaid my faith by coping admirably
We only had one rain shower and that didn't seem to dampen anyone spirits, the races were always close with no one skipper getting away from the others indeed the points between the first three were that close that nobody knew who had won until the results were announced.
Despite all the tweaking that has taken place since the last event, for the second month in a row Keith Coxon, took the honours, he is at pains to point out much of his success is due to his superbly built Glen Keith which was built by Paul Risdale.
Paul sailing Pinwinnie, took second place from Peter Jackson, Red Rooster the first three skippers were covered by just five points and no one really dominated.
Even the two skippers Mike Ewart, Ardmore and Peter Shepherd, Sheep Dip had their moments in some of the races, enough so that everyone went home happy, just not often enough to be challenging for the lead on the scorecard!
Thanks to all that took part for the friendly spirit with which the event was held, during the course of the day we welcomed another three new skippers, who are about to embark upon building their own Wee Nips.
The next Wee Nip event at Abington Park is on September 14th, followed just a week later September 21st by the first Wee Nip Open event at Two Islands RYC. NOR & Registration form on the Wee Nip site.
