Wee Nip Racing
November 2013
The interest in these yachts has really taken off, with twelve skippers present at this months event four of these borrowing boats whilst theirs are under construction and another three additional skippers attending in the hope that there was something for them to sail we just didn't have enough boats to go around. The conditions today were atrocious with a long downpour for most of the morning and very little wind it looked as if it was going to be a pretty miserable day for everyone, however our spirits were kept up with some amusing banter and Grany's Gazebo whilst it failed to work it's magic this time at least kept most of us dry, although if the number of skippers attending events keeps growing at this rate we will have to ask Paul if he has a marquee.

The club were trying out a new system whereby some skippers sit out to act as observers and after groups of four races the skippers are seeded so that those skippers who are close on the scorecard remain racing together.
As the winds were light we managed a total of sixteen races which meant all skippers were in twelve of those, however as everybody took their turn at observing all the skippers felt involved throughout the day.
We had four visiting skippers who had arranged to borrow boats in advance, all four of these currently have their own boats under construction,Tom Steel travelled down from Boston Model Boat Club to sail Black & White and pick up the parts for two boats.
Vic Tatman has finished "Old Smuggler" however his car has let him down so he came on the bus from Bedford to help out as he couldn't bring his boat, thank you Vic you are a diamond. Alan Smedley from Emberton Park Sailing Club dropped in on the off chance there was a sail, sorry Alan not this time guess you will just have to get Glengoyne finished. Richard Doleman also brought by Drambuie still under construction but looking very good so far.
Keith Coxon was once again the man to beat finishing the day with a very impressive 10 points from twelve races, young Andrew Sturt sailed Pig's Nose very impressively to beat one of the class founders and definitely a stalwart of Abington Park MYC Peter Jackson to second place, however he in turn was cock a hoop to beat Keith in race seven.
Paul Risdale had a poor showing today by his usual excellent standards however in the three races Keith was observing he managed three wins to consolidate his fourth place. Norman Hardy won race two his first and was consistent throughout the day which enabled him to come home fifth. Next was the first of the visitors Tom Steel, sailing the club boat Black & White he had a string of good results on his scorecard just the odd lapse here and there keeping him from a higher position, for his first time sailing in this kind of competition it was a very creditable result. Trevor Thomas comes a long way from Nottingham to sail with us and he is starting to put it together with the Wee Nip his best results coming when the top three were in the fleet.
Another newcomer first time with his beautifully finished boat Stag's Breath, Geoff Raygada gradually started to get it together after a bit of sail tweaking during one of his observation races. Bob Lamb borrowed Sheep Dip a match made in heaven you would of thought however Peter Shepherd's quirky set up on this boat really didn't suit him however he was generous with his thanks for loan nonetheless.
Down into the heavy weight division now, with the light winds it probably was always going to be a day when Long John & Something Special struggled, however both Keith Jackson & Nigel Rudd soldiered on, Nigel very generously handing over his boat to Keith when he had an issue with Long John which put him out for four races and put pay to any chance of Nigel scoring a decent finish.
Brian Hawkins started brightly enough and if I remember correctly was leading a couple of races early on, he then had a mystery issue with Banff, batteries?, and despite trying to fix the problem during race six, whatever the issue was it really put pay to the rest of the days racing for him. Once again we owe enormous thanks to Sandra Hardy for her efforts at wrestling with the scorecard system as she has done throughout the season.

Mike Ewart the only man who could have beaten Keith Coxon, to take possession of the 2013 Champions Trophy was unfortunately to far away to make it back to today's race, consequently we presented Keith with his prize during the lunch interval and he was most gracious in accepting and thanking our club for it's hospitality during the season.
