Martin Dale Cup 2013 - RG65 Competition
June 2nd
Six skippers were in attendance for the Martin Dale Cup for the June event, all the boats having previously passed scrutineering the course that was set was quite challanging not only for the skippers to sail but for me to describe. The first mark was taken to port upwind, then we headed downind to wards the leeward mark however we had to negotiate the start finish buoys as a small chipolata in the middle of the course, before preceeding on to the downwind marker, this was again rounded to port and then back up to the upwind once again taking in the chipolata, the final leg was the traditional sausage around the upwind, downwind marks passing through the start gate. Needless to say the course can be best described as an acquired taste!
That having been said it did demand of the skippers a good knowledge of the rights of way and despite the occasional coming together we all managed to remain friends.
A nice diverse selection of standard designed hulls were being sailed all with swing rigs, Paul Risdale with a RG65 Goth designed by Frank Russell was the class of the field finishing with just 16 points, Peter Shepherd sailed the trusty Jif65 Maximo Lange design and came 2nd followed home by Vic Tatman with another one of Maximo Lange designs built by Paul a Puma (Jif2). Paul was most pleased to have all the top three positions filled by boats he had built.
Then came two hulls from local boy Peter Jackson, the Black Ghost of Nigel Rudd who sailed very well to take two wins and finish 4th and then Peters own Ghost in 5th. The results were completed by Dave Lissaman with a new hull design from the USA called Doppler by John Taylor which looks like it was showing much potential.
The intricate course and tricky wind conditions in the morning made for some interesting racing, but as the winds picked up and the skippers gained a better understanding of the course the racing became a little easier with everyone challanging for the lead at some point or other. Next months RG65 competition for the Martin Dale Cup is being held on the 7th July and we look forward to another good days racing.
