Mixed Fleet 8th February 2014
Well done to Norman Hardy, who sailed his Wee Nip, "Red Hackle" the best to a victory in this months Mixed Fleet racing, in the strengthening winds he handled his boat really well, to not only overcome the handicap but to keep on winning races also.
Paul Risdale brought a whole Fleet of Micro 540's including his latestversion based upon a Goth, fitted with a sail winch and Bermuda Rigged it did appear to be extreemely quick. Unfortunately first time on the water he encountered a battery failure which meant he switched boats part way through. It does appear that for this class the Bermuda Rig is the way to go, giving more adaptability to the differing wind conditions and being more forgiving in the stronger conditions. The footys in the fleet all started on smaller rigs "B "sails and by the end most were down to the storm rig "D".

Mike Ewart was trying out a set of newly made Una rigs from an article by Scott Wallis on the sailfootyuk website, which seemed to give him some improvements over last weeks Freds Big Toephy performance.
The Jackson/Shepherd SliM testing program took a slight set back when the sail arm on the PS boat kept slipping on the newly installed (at 4 am that morning!) servo, that having been said the new shaped fin on PJ's hull did seem to be an improvement. Andrew Sturt got in some practice sailing Footies using his 1299 to good effect and having brought along his dinghy sailing friend Morgan Smith, the two juniors had a terrific battle between themselves which was hopefully as enjoyable to participate in as it was for me to watch. |
Next week it is the February Wee Nip Medal Competition being hosted by Two Islands at Furzton Lake, Milton Keynes.
Handicap Racing - Understanding the Table - the colours represent the start each competitor started on for that heat.
The Abington Park version of Mixed Fleet Racing consists of timed intervals between starts as follows
Red Start - goes after the one minute countdown
Yellow Start - countdown begins immediately after red and goes after another one minute countdown
Green Start - countdown begins immediately after yellow and goes after a 40 second countdown
Scratch - countdown begins immediately after green and goes after a 20 second countdown
If one competitior is left on the Red Start he becomes the Hare, should he out sail the others and finish first instead of moving to the Yellow start all the other competitors move back one start so yellows become reds, greens become yellows and scratch become greens.
