Mixed Fleet 5th January 2014
Eight Skippers attended the first Fleet racing of 2014, today it was an even split between the Footy & Wee Nip competitors, in addition we had a couple of other Footy skippers in attendance, Tim Lees who was testing out a new sail on his Papaya and very nice Easy3 made in Balsa which was on it's first outing and appeared to sail very nicely indeed.
The racers amongst us set about dealing with the light winds and although the forecast was for a freshening wind, it picked up a little but nothing like the predicted level. More Footy testing was being done by Messers .Shepherd & Jackson on the new SliMs, hopefully they will get it right soon!
It will come to something of a surprise to our junior member Andrew Sturt to find he sailed his Wee Nip, Spirit to joint first place, I couldn't separate him from the more seasoned campaigner Mike Ewart (Ardmore) even using count back. I understand that, not to be left out dad Richard is now building a Wee Nip also.
Richard Smith was once again with us sailing his nicely finished Wee Nip, Craggenmore, he has been awaiting the arrival of some sheet line for some time which has hampered his efforts as the current material he is using is a little on the thick side and preventing his foresail sheet from opening correctly, well done to him for persevering.

Handicap Racing - Understanding the Table - the colours represent the start each competitor started on for that heat.
The Abington Park version of Mixed Fleet Racing consists of timed intervals between starts as follows
Red Start - goes after the one minute countdown
Yellow Start - countdown begins immediately after red and goes after another one minute countdown
Green Start - countdown begins immediately after yellow and goes after a 40 second countdown
Scratch - countdown begins immediately after green and goes after a 20 second countdown
If one competitior is left on the Red Start he becomes the Hare, should he out sail the others and finish first instead of moving to the Yellow start all the other competitors move back one start so yellows become reds, greens become yellows and scratch become greens.
