Mixed Fleet 19th January 2014
Thanks to all of the skippers who turned out today to sail, we were rewarded with a beautiful day with just about enough wind to keep everyone happy , the light winds suiting the Footy types, where with the addition of the visiting David Wilkinson (Iambus2) to the fleet the competition was tough. When the wind freshened the larger types such as the Wee Nip, RG65 and Micro 540 came into their own, everyone was pleased to see Paul Risdale back with us.
A special mention must go to Mike Ewart who brought along his 6 metre, which he sailed with the utmost caution so as not to destroy any of the smaller more fragile boats on the water, it certainly made for a spectacular sight in amongst the rest of the fleet and was much enjoyed by the spectators who were out in force for a pleasurable day in the park.

And so to the racing, inevitably Mike won overall, proving that waterline length is everything, once again Andrew Sturt sailed his Wee Nip very well finishing a well deserved second, it is just a shame he will miss next weeks Wee Nip medal race, sailing full size competitions. David Wilkinson, Peter Shepherd & Peter Jackson had some monumental battles with their three Footies so it is all looking good for next seasons competitions.
I have to say Paul Risdale performance slipped under my radar, I believe he was somewhat hampered by getting onto the green start just as the conditions turned light again. Richard Smith & Tim Lees continue to improve both of them putting in a couple of creditable performances, I am sure that the more they sail the more consistent they will become. Lets just say that Richard Sturt is looking forward to completing and sailing his Wee Nip. Next week it is the January Wee Nip Medal Competition. |
We finally got to give Mike his prize for coming third in last years Martin Dale Cup competition for RG65's.
The 2014 competition will be a combined RG65 and Micro 540 to be held at Daventry Country Park. |
Handicap Racing - Understanding the Table - the colours represent the start each competitor started on for that heat.
The Abington Park version of Mixed Fleet Racing consists of timed intervals between starts as follows
Red Start - goes after the one minute countdown
Yellow Start - countdown begins immediately after red and goes after another one minute countdown
Green Start - countdown begins immediately after yellow and goes after a 40 second countdown
Scratch - countdown begins immediately after green and goes after a 20 second countdown
If one competitior is left on the Red Start he becomes the Hare, should he out sail the others and finish first instead of moving to the Yellow start all the other competitors move back one start so yellows become reds, greens become yellows and scratch become greens.
