Final Mixed Fleet of 2013
Numerous skippers turned up for the final Mixed Fleet event of the year with all of the different types of yacht for next years competition represented, the promised winds came but only later on during the day so it was ideal testing conditions for the PJ & myself who once again were at the vanguard of the Footy fleet with the ever improving SliMs, Paul Risdale brought a balsa chine version of a SliM design although the balance (not to mention the colour) seemed a little awry, making him switch to a Micro540 quite early on. The entire Sturt family was in attendance with Richard Sturt sailing a Razor 3 Footy (03) and Mum, Jenny very kindly stayed and did the scoring for us, thank you Jenny, goodness knows how it would have turned out if you hadn't!.
We had the usual number of the ever popular Wee Nips, with Mike Ewart's newly rebuilt Ardmore making it's way all the way up the handicap to scratch, he was joined there by Andrew Sturt with his first time on the water Wee Nip, "Spirit" (50). Spirit looked a very fine example and Andrew sails her very well, I am sure with his experience of sailing full size dinghies Andrew will be one to watch in the 2014 Wee Nip medal series. Another youngster sailing his dad's Wee Nip, Banff was Robert Hawkins, once again he handles the boat very well although without any other sailing experience, race situations are somewhat more daunting!
Three RG65's were present, Tim Lees, Puma (93), Norman Hardy new lightweight Jif 65 (72) & Geoff Raygada with a newly completed Gothic65 (57). The strengthening winds played a bit of havoc with all three towards the end of the event with neither Tim or Norman able to drop down to a smaller sail and Geoff switched to his trusty Wee Nip "Stag's Breath" for the later half of the competition.
Many thanks must go to Paul Risdale, who has been a great supporter of the Abington Park MYC since it's inception and this event was no exception where he provided his usual small fleet of Micro540's for others to sail, these included Nick Goodman, whose Wee Nip "Clansman" was recently "shackoned " at the "workshop at the centre of the universe" and now just needs to apply the final touches, a passer by who has a Footy under construction and Brian Hawkins, I didn't get a chance to speak to Brian when he left so I didn't find out how he found the experience.
Another attendee but declining to race was Steve Allan who came to collect his parts for his Wee Nip build and had a go with the club boat Black & White finding it much more to his taste than his own Victoria.
The difficult conditions and the constant changes of boat made a bit of a mess of the scorecard so if you think there is some discrepancy in the reporting of the results, there probably is, but we did the best we could with what we could read and I hope that if you missed out this time you will come back in the New Year to put things right, we start sailing mixed fleet again on January 5th, 2014, with our first class competition event, a Wee Nip Medal race on 25th January 2014, in the meantime have a Merry Christmas and best wishes for the coming New Year.

Handicap Racing - Understanding the Table - the colours represent the start each competitor started on for that heat.
The Abington Park version of Mixed Fleet Racing consists of timed intervals between starts as follows
Red Start - goes after the one minute countdown
Yellow Start - countdown begins immediately after red and goes after another one minute countdown
Green Start - countdown begins immediately after yellow and goes after a 40 second countdown
Scratch - countdown begins immediately after green and goes after a 20 second countdown
If one competitior is left on the Red Start he becomes the Hare, should he out sail the others and finish first instead of moving to the Yellow start all the other competitors move back one start so yellows become reds, greens become yellows and scratch become greens.
