Mixed Fleet 12th January 2014
A chilly start today saw the ice breakers out before racing could commence, the start was delayed because of this however we managed to clear the lake in reasonable time and to complete a full program of racing, although the early races were shorter and competitors had to sail around the few remaining icebergs as they made their way up the lake.
The wind gradually freshened throughout the day and as it did so the Footies became outclassed and the larger boats came to the fore. Andrew Sturt once again sailed his Wee Nip (Spirit) to a well deserved victory, closely followed by Norman Hardy and the lightweight Jif 65 he recently completed. Our only visitor from Two Islands today, Keith Coxon sailed his Micro Magic into third, all threee of these finished on scratch with Andrew managing to come from the back to pass the entire fleet twice!
The Footies were headed up by Peter Shepherd once again sailing an experimental SliM although with the Footy season starting soon the experimenting will have to end soon. Peter Jackson's SliM sailed better once the wind strengthened and these two continued their friendly rivalry with each volunteering to drop down a start whenever the other won a race. Richard Sturt was hampered by the handicap, when he was on the red start his results were fine however once he had dropped down to yellow and the wind freshened he struggled to keep ahead of the rest of the fleet.
There was a noticeable improvement in Tim Lees sailing once he had got onto the right sails for his hull, it seems the boat is not as capable of carrying as much sail as some of the others. Dave McCann once again had his Easy 3 on the water, just starting out Dave was experimenting with a new Una rig, I am sure once he gets his sails sorted the little footy will start to respond a little better.
Thanks to Sandra Hardy for doing the scores and keeping the event moving, and to all the skippers who braved the cold conditions to today.

Handicap Racing - Understanding the Table - the colours represent the start each competitor started on for that heat.
The Abington Park version of Mixed Fleet Racing consists of timed intervals between starts as follows
Red Start - goes after the one minute countdown
Yellow Start - countdown begins immediately after red and goes after another one minute countdown
Green Start - countdown begins immediately after yellow and goes after a 40 second countdown
Scratch - countdown begins immediately after green and goes after a 20 second countdown
If one competitior is left on the Red Start he becomes the Hare, should he out sail the others and finish first instead of moving to the Yellow start all the other competitors move back one start so yellows become reds, greens become yellows and scratch become greens.
